Our goals

The main goal of the SBGA is providing support to artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and developing effective, sustainable and responsible supply chains from these producers to our members.

This is achieved by:

  • Providing technical assistance to ASGM producers
  • Enabling compliance with SBGA sourcing policy
  • Ensuring access of ASGM production to the market
  • Enabling traceability of value chains through a chain-of-custody system
  • Supporting sustainable development of mining operations
  • Facilitating access to capital for ASGM-related investments

Key partners

The SBGA collaborates closely with key partners:

  • Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) under the Better Gold Initiative (BGI) for artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) programme
  • Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) such as the Responsible Jewellery Council, Fair Trade International and the Alliance for Responsible Mining to increase the volume of responsibly produced ASM gold in the market
  • Selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in key markets to leverage awareness of ASGM challenges and opportunities

Core activities

Core activities defined by the SBGA are to:

  • Promote purchase of responsibly produced ASM gold in Switzerland;
  • Create sustainable value chains from mine to market;
  • Expand the network of eligible mining operations;
  • Increase the flow of responsibly produced ASM gold;
  • Through the Better Gold Fund, invest in social & environmental improvements within the network of eligible ASM producers;
  • Raise awareness & maintain open dialogue with the civil society on ASM challenges;
  • Attract new SBGA members.
